Imagining the Future
Most people want to be with some one they can identify with, and who has enthusiasm about doing new things. If that person wants to move in a certain direction, it would be only natural to want to continue along with him or her. Thus, people would tend to follow that leader.
If anyone has worked for some one like this, the work will be full of good memories and rewards. It's nice working for people who want us to succeed, because wanting this proves that such leaders care about making workers happy. These leaders are called transformational.
"Transformational leadership" is future oriented. It involves a leader who wants a specific result to occur in the future, which will be an improvement over the present state of the business or government. The future goal is one that can be described in detail, because the leader has envisioned exactly what he or she wants to achieve.
What it Takes to Succeed
"Transformational leadership" will require a leader to convince others that his or her vision is so worth pursuing that they will become committed to working toward it. The key to this, and any, commitment is to persevere for an extended period of time, always keeping the goal in mind, but not expecting success to come without difficulties. Such persistence happens only when those who work to achieve the goal keep on believing that it is possible to succeed.
Another activity necessary in "transformational leadership" is to have frequent ceremonies to commemorate even the smallest achievement along the way to success This will demonstrate the reality that progress has been made, and will maintain the motivation of all workers.
The Effect on People
Those who commit to the visionary goal will rightly anticipate becoming a part of "transformational leadership" themselves, once success is attained. However, in "transformational leadership," the desire to be a leader must be second to the desire to arrive at the future vision of the governmental or business operation.
"Transformational leadership" can succeed and make a difference only in companies or nations that need to change because the present situation is not working. Therefore, "transformational leadership" would be out of place in an organization where everything is going well and employees are happy. But if this is not the case, then this type of leadership is the right stuff to breathe life into the workers and give them hope for a better day. Once the enthusiasm spreads, the better vision for the future will get closer each day.
How will some one at the government office or company know when he or she is caught up in the enthusiasm of "transformational leadership"? There are certain distinct traits that become noticeable:
- The leader will pay close attention to whether the workers are happy.
- Independent, creative thinking will be encouraged.
- Workers will have a strong motivation to realize the vision.
- Workers will both like and respect their leader.
At the heart of the transformational striving will be an intriguing vision that will be challenging to achieve, but not impossible.
